What is the Headstone Project?
Our Purpose
The primary aim of The Headstone Project Victoria is to honour and mark the graves of our Veterans at no cost to the families.
A secondary aim is to support the work of the Office of Australian War Graves and the Department of Veterans Affairs in acknowledging the service of our Veterans.
The Headstone Project Victoria is part of an Australian Headstone movement. Comparable organisations exist in Tasmania and South Australia while plans are underway to form a branch in Queensland.
The role of the Headstone Project Victoria is to act as an overarching body which provides support to local communities and to facilitate action across the state.
We plan to do this by encouraging local communities to investigate whether there are unmarked Veterans’ graves in their local cemeteries. We can provide the local community with support, processes, and knowledge to research unmarked graves, contact the families of Veterans and arrange for plinths and plaques to be installed.
The first project underway is at the Point Lonsdale/Queenscliff Cemetery. The local community has rallied to the cause and is already undertaking work to mark numerous graves at the Cemetery.
Other communities across the state are already making enquiries as to how they can set up local projects with Headstone support.
